Last night was the first time I met with B1ackcr0w in Weston to dicuss the starting of the Weston/Burnham-on-Sea/North Somerset Linux User’s Group. We’ve written a [somewhat brief] action plan to get the LUG going, I really hope it’s a success. Even sitting in a pub with a stranger talking Linux was really fun. [...]

I just noticed that I haven’t mentioned that this is not a problem with Archlinux… I don’t know if they’ve just put in a quick work-around to unload the module before sleep/hibernate, or if it’s just that the problem has been solved. Either way: it just works now.

Fairly recently I noticed a change in the information that my computer gives about its cpu, by which I mean that rather than displaying my dual core processor as having two cores it now only appears to detect one. In terms of time scale I really cannot be sure, but I’m pretty convinced that it’s [...]

A quick update… this is also noted as Bug 491235 on Red Hat Bugzilla, which points out that it’s also known as bug 11887 on the Kernel.org
Apparently there is work in process, which is positive

Well as it happens I’ve now discovered exactly what it was that has been causing my suspend problems since I bought my laptop. It was the wireless card. All this time I was thinking that it was a power management problem and that meant my system wouldn’t suspend. Well, since believing that it was having [...]

Last week I updated my laptop to use packages from the Ubuntu 9.04 repositories. Since then my laptop now has the ability to suspend (hibernate isn’t quite there yet, but with some tweaking it’ll come…). This ticks the final box for me and I’ve now got a fully functioning laptop. Woo!!
I’ve also been playing with [...]

So I’ve been using Slackware for about a week now… As I approach the end of week two I have to admit that I’m not all that satisfied with progress on this experiment.
Slackware is definately faster than Ubuntu was. Though the same could be said for Fedora 10. I now know that to make the [...]

I spent some of yesterday tweaking, setting up a nice desktop using Fluxbox, choosing a file manager etc., but my major task was to get virtual machines on the go and this proved to be a lot harder than I thought it would be. It turns out that at the moment there’s a bug that [...]

I have set myself the challenge of making my laptop work better. I’m off of work for 3 weeks and so that is my time limit… I figured that if it’s not completely usable in 3 weeks time then I’ll just put Fedora 10 back on it and wait for things to improve over time.
I [...]

Woo! I just got a new hard disk for my birthday. It is a 320Gb Western Digital “My Passport”.
I’ve decided with this disk to keep the Fat32 File system on there so that I can use it with other peoples computers on Windows or Mac too.
I’m going to use this drive like a portable backup. [...]
